I too have been getting regular failures. I am usually trying to download radio progs. with get_iplayer. RadioDownloader which also uses rtmpdump is also failing regularly.
I have a feeling that this is due to the Beeb updating its iPlayer server in readiness for the launch of the new version. I tend to do my downloading at branches of Pret or MacD's or at the QEH foyer on the South Bank. I can get downloads of 1Mb/s when there's not too many users around. So its not as though the failures are due to sporadic or over-loaded connections.
