I don't think there is an ideal hardware for running getfem++. It compiles on 32 bits systems as well as on 64 bits systems without problems. It has been recently tested on several recent linux distribution with gcc-3.4 or later. It compiles also with intel c++ compiler and on MacOS X with g++. Of course, if you want to solve big linear systems with MUMPS for instance you will need a large amount of memory.
