That's right.  Translucency support is up to the renderer; currently you'll 
only see transparency when rendering with Quartz (i.e., OS X).  Classic MacOS, 
Windows, and Linux treat an opacity > 50 as solid and < 50 as transparent (I 
don't recall what they do with values of exactly 50).

"Quick" way, no, but there is a way significantly easier (and faster) than 
mucking about with pixels in an RGBSurface.  Use the Picture.Mask property to 
control the transparency of your occluder (which will need to be a picture 
rather than an Object2D, of course).  This works on all platforms.  Let me know 
if it's not clear how to use it.
