After your updated explanation, I agree with Charles. The Canvas might be easier or at least a better solution.
One thing I'm not sure about is why the text is disappearing when you resize the window. It almost sounds as if this is something that is to be expected. Have you tried reducing the point size of the font as the window size is reduced?
