No. You may have to install libffi. On Debian it's separate from
gcc, maybe that's also the case for MacOS X.
I found it in MacPorts, but that didn't seem to help yet.

I use MacPorts too. You need to set the following variables before
running configure:
CFLAGS = -I/opt/local/include
LDFLAGS = -L/opt/local/lib

That worked, but killed the performance. It must be picking up other
stuff too.
