There is some good stuff on what's new for VHDL 2008 here:

http://www.doulos.com/knowhow/vhdl_designers_guide/vhdl_2008/

If you're just learning then I would compile with 2002 and not worry
about 2008. There's some very neat features of 2008 but not all the
synthesis tools support it anyway - e.g. Xilinx ISE certainly didn't
last time I checked.

VHDL 2002 adds some things which can be quite useful - e.g. protected
types and shared variables but these aren't something that you'd
necessarily pick up on straight away. For synthesis there's very little
change between the versions and you wouldn't be particularly constrained
by an older version - most of the changes apply to the testbench type
code - I definitely use featrues of VHDL 2002 for testbenches - there's
stuff you just can't do in older versions - but most synthesisable code
is compatible back to 87 as well as 93 - file I/O was pretty much the
only thing that wasn't backwards compatible from 93 to 87 and that isn't
synthesisable anyway.

If anybody has tried David Koontz's suggestion on the machine readable
compilation then I for one would be interested to know the results.

Is there any reason why you need it ?
couldn't you code work with the standard 1993
                        version ?

no, no specific reason. i simply wanted to code with the
                latest
                version of vhdl.

well, it adds certain features that make sense once you have
        exhausted all
of VHDL'93 features... It is already VERY rich :-) and everybody
        uses '93
because everybody uses '93... What do you design btw ?

                thanks.

        you're welcome :-)

i'm not designing anything just trying to learn vhdl. the book i
have talks about vhdl and mentions, 2000, 2002 and 2008
standards. i just wanted to try them out.
