It depends. gcc ghdl isn't very good for netlist simulation, once you have a few thousand instances compile time gets very slow.
However, for more procedural VHDL code (usually what you have before synthesis), GHDL works well, and is fast.
Third party models are often fairly buggy, and GHDL's strict standard interpretation often causes error messages that need patching the model. But IMO that's not such a big issue.
