This works nicely but can only be implemented reasonably well on the Desktop level. Actually, it's exactly how the GNOME screenshot utility works. Being able to take a screenshot by using a global keyboard shortcut makes it a lot more useful than the GIMP's screenshot plug-in can ever become.
