Nothing will just work when GEGL is used. But you are right that it will be a lot easier as sharing of pixel data between layers and masks will be trivial as soon as everything is a graph. It does also seem that this feature will benefit from layer groups (or even require them). But so far the proposal is by no means specific enough to comment on it.
