Sorry but this is simply not verbose enough. How exactly do you edit
them? What kind of chnages do you apply? Tools and filters you use?

The question should be understood literally :) Is GIMP the only tool
to get your job done?

Losing multiple layers, masks, extra channels etc. is unsafe.
