The way I usually do it (it depends on the task, though, but in most cases anyway) is:
1. duplicate the layer 2. do all corrections on the new layer as if I was working on the portion I'm really interested in 3. mask the new layer to make it fully transparent 4. restore the areas of interest using the brush tool As I said, this doesn't apply to all situations, but in most cases it gets the job done, plus I can enable and disable the edited layer at any time.
