(1)make a new layer, with 'Alpha' attribute. (in a new image file)
(2) select and cut the image from your banner, and copy to this alpha layer
( so that only the area having visible pixels is opaque)
(3) Save in a format which preserves Alpha(transparency) information
warning: this could go wrong, if the background layer is opaque. delete the
background layer if so.

please correct if am wrong, or easier steps are available.
