try grokking the gimp.  its from new rider.  i forget the website right
now but you can find it in its entirety online too.  and the cool cover
is by tigert.
it really has good sections on working with photos and how to fix them.
what kidn of problems are you having that are making working with the
gimp a "nightmare"?
