The "id: cannot find name for group ID 19720" should not be causing any problems, I get that message myself. Did you install GINI on the lab machines (or on your account)? If so, did you edit .bashrc to have the two export commands? If so, can you tell me what happens when you use putty directly, and then type in gserver in the command line?
