If you're interested in git and exploring Java, you might consider helping
to evaluate
pull requests for git plugin or the git client plugin of the Jenkins
continuous integration
server. Those components are written in Java, but they rely on command
line git
for the git implementation. That would allow you to explore Java, learn
more about
git, and possibly help an open source project.

Bug reports are at https://issues.jenkins-ci.org/issues/?filter=14040
and https://issues.jenkins-ci.org/issues/?filter=14041

Source code is at https://github.com/jenkinsci/git-client-plugin and
https://github.com/jenkinsci/git-plugin
