What VCS have you used in the past?

I'm asking because what you perceive as a limitation I see as a
strength. It's a matter of separation of concerns, git is only very
loosely connected to any of the multiple repository hosting solutions
that exist.  It's in fact so loosely connected that Microsoft has gotten
git to connect to TFS!
