Another completely different path could be.

    1. Convert cvs first to mercurial using the convert command. For me
       that worked fine, but maybe my repositories were simpler, and I
       never have really binaries (well PDFs sometimes) in my
       repositories.

    2. Then use the hg-git plugin to push to a git repository
