Sorry, did you mean the specialized append interface (as Option 2), that assumes buffer ownership? I mislabeled the options in the paragraph you quoted (now corrected). I'm not familiar with the code, but I don't think it's safe to implement, if users can access the underlying buffers via `getDataBuffer()`?
