Review Comment:
   Do the C++/go implementations always write the continuation token? We could 
use that to detect the "new" format? Perhaps?
   
   If this isn't possible that's fine, we'll flag it as a breaking change and 
make it prominent in the changelog. The important thing is that the Rust client 
can read what is written by the corresponding server version. This is currently 
not the case with this PR, and the fact no tests are failing is rather 
concerning tbh...
