> there's no reason to maintain the extra padding bytes Logically I agree with you, but aligning on cache line and page sizes is still beneficial to performance, especially when interfacing with the GPU. GL implementations or libraries will allocate buffers in multiples of the page size, and unaligned copies are slower. I don't think it's right to negatively impact users who rely on this benefit, especially when the logical information is also immediately available on the same data structure.
