cakeni opened a new pull request, #11654: URL: https://github.com/apache/arrow-rs/pull/11654
# Which issue does this PR close? Closes #11590. # Rationale for this change `substring` can fail on a null string slot whose hidden bytes would be cut inside a UTF-8 character. For example, `[null, "ab"]` with `é` under the null errors at start 1 instead of returning `[null, "b"]`. # What changes are included in this PR? Skip null slots in `byte_substring`, keeping their output offsets unchanged. Non-null strings still use the existing character-boundary checks. # Are these changes tested? The regression retains multibyte strings under null slots, covers Utf8 and LargeUtf8 with sliced inputs, and compares positive/negative starts and length limits with StringView. It also checks that an invalid boundary in a non-null string still errors. # Are there any significant user-facing changes? No. -- This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service.
