I'd like to work on this. Proposal: allow casting to an extension type only when the input's type is exactly the extension's storage type, or something that can already be cast to that storage type. Cast to the storage type, then wrap the result as the extension type. Casting from one extension type to another stays unsupported, as discussed in #1052.
