Rich-T-kid opened a new pull request, #11973:
URL: https://github.com/apache/arrow-rs/pull/11973

   # Which issue does this PR close?

Part of #11900. Split from #11912 so the `MutableArrayData` changes can be
reviewed separately.

   # Rationale for this change

`MutableArrayData` has `Result`-returning construction and extension paths,
but buffer allocation can still panic. Failed nested extensions can also leave
child state partially updated.

   # What changes are included in this PR?

   - Use fallible buffer allocation and growth throughout `MutableArrayData`.
   - Check derived capacities and dense union offsets before writing.
   - Restore parent and nested child state after a failed extension so the
builder can be reused.

   # Are these changes tested?

Added overflow coverage and regression tests for failed nested extensions
and retries. Arrow Data tests, doctests, Clippy, formatting, and the repository
pre-push checks pass.

   # Are there any user-facing changes?

Fallible `MutableArrayData` APIs return allocation and overflow errors in
cases that previously panicked.
