We have had many reports of performance degradation since the switch to the SDF by default read translation, and our own tests found between 20-25% performance degradation that we cannot justify. This PR is basically 'a revert' of #13021 It introduces the new `use_sdf_read` so we can still have a path to test the performance of the SDF path so we can be able to judge when to make it the default again.
