Its main purpose is to allow conversations about commits; like at the bottom of this commit http://github.com/rails/rails/commit/83e29b9773ac113ceacb1e36c2f333d692de2573#-P0 So instead of having to remember all the commit urls or leave them in your browser open + refresh them every hour or so, it will monitor all of them automatically. Is this useful to more than just me?
