Yep, as the man page says, it cleans up and recompresses objects, removes duplicates. Run on a repository-by-repository basis, so probably the repo getting the most pushes and pulls to it will show the most speed difference when you git gc that repo.
I'm interested in whether github repositories require any maintenance of this kind? And if so, how would we run maintenance on them?
