Sorry, but I call bullshit. Forget your whole decision tree, and
answer the only question that makes sense:

is the smallest plan making your life easier (or whatever other
incentives you might have) to the extent that it's worth $7 (read:2-3
beers) / mo?

If the answer is yes, buy it, and forget about all the tuition fee and
whatnot. It's that easy.

Github's business plan is fairly clear: if you need private repos, you
gotta pay for them - if it's not worth, go elsewhere. The guys at
github are even violating this rule in some cases to help university
students.

If all these possibilities are still not good enough, set up your own
git account somewhere (http://railstips.org/2008/11/24/gitn-your-
shared-host-on) - perhaps on an university server... or... I don't
know.
