*[SOLVED]* If anyone else runs into this issue...From the Gitlab server you must ssh into your remote server as a formality. When you do, the remote server will ask you an interactive question to be added "the the list of known_hosts (yes/no)."
If you don't do this all important step, the question goes unanswered and you don't get access.
