FYI We explicitly warn against making the repo path a symlink https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce/blob/1d432e96bc44ad2f7f67dc4a551d34083f51f281/config/gitlab.yml.example#L236 since it has caused a lot of problems in the past.
