If you find a commit/branch/tag that you want a snapshot of, find the link to its tree (something like http://gitorious.org/gitorious/mainline/trees/bfab7ec64fb4c5f607bb038ed80e670e6a3337e0) and select the Download as tar.gz link on the right side of the page.
