ISLAMABAD (APP) - Ministry of Science & Technology will train 10,000
police officials in the art of data capturing and sorting by using state
of the art technology. The project will be executed by COMSATS Institute
of Information Technology in a period of ten months. An amount of Rs 33
million has been allocated for the project.

At present there is a shortage of skills and of trained human resources
in different technical categories and of different levels of IT in
various departments of police. This shortage is more acute at the lower
level. There is a need to train officers and officials of police
department in such a way that they can gainfully use IT in their normal
office matters so that their efficiency is increased and their
productivity is enhanced. Sooner or later the concept of e- government
will come into force, for that the staff has to be prepare to take the
new approach.

It has been observed that while all the IT driven activities are time-
specific and demand driven, the police officials are not geared to meet
these challenges. Very few know the art of word processing and concept
of e-mail etc. The situation demands for urgent orientation of these
police officials.

The initiative to launch a programme of training of 10,000 police
officials has been taken by IT Division under the consideration that the
training of the police officials in a systematic way may increase the
speed of implementation of different government projects and routine
operations. In order to achieve the objective of Good Governance,
self-reliability and efficiency within the available resources, such
training is required immediately.

The core of trained people produced after the completion of the project
will provide the government with a pool of trained police officials,
which so far they have not been able to raise, help raise overall
efficiency of the department, help adopting the IT culture in the
department, will improve overall comprehension and skill of the police
officials, catalyze the whole process of e-government and will help in
upgradation of facilities at the training institutes where the training
will be imparted.

The training will be conducted in different phases in major cities
namely Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Peshawar, Karachi and Quetta in
collaboration with the existing institutes in the public and private
sector that have adequate facilities and have already consented to
participate in the programme.
