I have the same problems, this is why there is no new package of 0.5.3 in
Debian potato, sorry folks.

The gnome-libs maintainer of Debian is AWOL, so I don't know when new gnome
libs will be available. (But I read on debian-gtk-gnome that someone will
take over "rather soon").

Damon, do you want non-Gnome 0.5.3 in Debian unstable or shall I wait until
gnome-libs is updated? It's your call.
