It depends on the application supporting that, I guess, so there's no real problem in here. I like gconf, but if it is a problem in windows, then I see a reason to not use it only for this and, thus, use a rcfile. If that's a consensus I can try to write a patch providing this feature as this is something that has been bothered me for a while.
