 I can't reproduce the behaviour you are describing (x86_64 openSuSE 10.2).
 I've extended your program slightly to print the elapsed time in usecs,
 too, and made the main program a little bit more flexible. Could you re-
 run your tests with that and attach the output? Does an identical program
 in C work? (if yes, please attach as well)
