I'm having a bit of trouble seeing exactly what change you want to make,
hidden amongst all the type-changing cleanup. Can we do what you want by
just having a new function `foo'` which is the same as some existing
function `foo` except that it takes a length argument rather than
calculating the length itself? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?
