I think there was another issue raised by this thread, namely that
building GHC using either
* a HEAD snapshot, or
* a newer GHC than the one we're building
is not guaranteed to work. configure should test for these, and fail
(perhaps with a `--force` option to ignore the error if you know what
you're doing).
