 Oops, I forgot: thanks for the report, and you were right to be
 suspicious!  Interface stability is a reasonable thing to expect.  The
 fact that you got different results when changing the booting compiler is
 really a red herring: you can get different results just by saying 'make
 clean' and recompiling.
