Comment:

 Crumbs, I got that totally back to front.  The PROFILED program runs
 faster!  (I though it was the un-profiled one.)  As Simon says that is
 deeply mysterious. I've changed Roman's email on the cc list to his gmail
 address.  `vector` is his package.
