Okay, so I ordered from Zenni and, I admit, I ordered a pair that was too short in height. At 24mm, my eyes would look down and see my natural, terrible eyesight, and look up and have to reintegrate my vision to super-real vision. Needless to say this was not good. Yes, it is my fault that I ordered too short lenses. I was a neophyte ordering online and I won't make the same mistake again.
In fact, after trying these glasses out for a while and realizing they simply won't do, I made a better decision and ordered a pair with bigger lenses. From Zenni, even--mostly because they have my high prescription available AND I received my previous pair with little fuss and in the amount of time I would expect them. It's been almost two weeks and I haven't received my new pair yet, but that's normal and I expect to receive them this week. Now, I don't want to be stuck with my fail-pair. I think the mistake I made could be common among those ordering first time online who do all the research they feel confident to do but ultimately don't get the reassurance of trying on a pair in the store. Well, I've opted to return this pair and I sent an email today indicating thus. Their phone voicemail was full--even though they recommended calling over emailing--so I emailed instead. Thankfully, I received an email later this evening: 09/29/08 Re: Order# -------- Dear Mr. ----------, Concerning your case, you may return the glasses, in their case, along with RA #-----------, a copy of the order, the order number, and a notation as to the reason of returning, to Zenni Optical at 27 Sunny Oaks Drive, San Rafael, CA. 94903. When we receive the glasses, we will check and give you a response. Thank you for selecting Zenni Optical for your vision needs. ZOCS: DJ (Order numbers have been censored, cuz, you know...) The RA number was something I needed from them before even returning the pair, so I like that. I'll probably get the "copy of the order" from the email they sent as confirmation of the order (though I'll be including everything they sent me in the package as well), and I'll type up a letter explaining my reasoning as my "notation" of why I'm returning. I'm going to follow the rules here. I don't know what will happen, but I think what I can expect, unless they absolutely refuse a refund, is half my cost back. I can deal with that. At this point my only other option is to have a pair of glasses I'll never wear. Now, while most of you may spend rather little on your lenses at Zenni, I have a high prescription and I ordered thin lenses (I really gambled and lost here, didn't I?) and so my glasses cost me $70. So I'm hoping to get back $35. What will be interesting is to see how much Zenni will fight or not over $35. That's my ultimate-option with them, I think (well, a full- refund would be nice but I'm not naive). If they fight and I'm stuck with a $70 pair of worthless glasses--which is again my fault, primarily--then I will never shop Zenni again out of customer spite. However, if they treat me compassionately, then even though I lost $35 I'll hold them as fair in favor because they'll have lost, too, but forgave me for my screw-up (because I'm not an eyeglasses doctor), then they'll probably have a customer for life since I'll supposedly know how to order my glasses now. Well, I'll keep you upraised of my situation and refund, in case you're like me and not experienced and might end up the same as me. Personally, I think these online companies would do well to treat their customers with the same "home-town" mentality that some eye- doctor places treat you, essentially I mean with compassion, so that even if you make a mistake they want your future business so they work with you. I won't make a mistake with their documentation, even though I consider it excessive. They can easily verify from my email address that I made an order; c'mon. But I'll play their game and see if they hold up to the promises of their website. If not, and also if so, you'll know about it in the next couple of weeks.
