I know this group is all about saving $$$, but I just read about a new approach to progessive/bifocal lenses that I just had to share.
The lens is call atLast! You can check out their site at http://www.atlastlens.com It is produced by a somewhat new company called Pixel Optics at http://www.pixeloptics.com ---Quoted from http://www.opticallabproducts.com--- A LENS IN A CATEGORY ALL BY ITSELF The new atLast! lens from PixelOptics is not a bifocal, not a blended bifocal, and not a progressive, but rather it represents its own new category as an Enhanced Multifocal. John Sailer There are 17 million bifocals sold in the U.S. every year, and PixelOptics™ is positioning its new atLast!™ lens as a previously unavailable alternative to them. Described as the “world’s first Enhanced Multifocal lens,” atLast! provides uninterrupted vision from close up to 5 ft. away and a soft power jump when transitioning from distance to far intermediate, according to the company. The lens is a composite of 1.53-index Trivex® material on the front and 1.67-index material on the back. The front contains the power gradient, the back contains the power segment, and when the two are molecularly bonded they create a composite lens with an embedded segment. It’s the first lens to offer four ranges of vision—distance, far intermediate (29 in. to 5 ft.), intermediate (18 in. to 29 in.), and near (14 in. to 18 in.). The far intermediate is a new concept that the company invented and is trying to patent. The lens “has 10 times the clear vision areas within 5 ft. of the wearer’s face,” reports the company. When looking through the distance range, the wearer will notice a slight change in magnification when moving down in the lens from distance to far intermediate, but there’s continuous clarity from the far intermediate range all the way down to the near. NEW LENS, NEW COMPANY Not only is the company introducing this new lens and this new lens category, but it is also introducing itself as a brand new lens company. The Roanoke, VA-based company is headed by seasoned industry veterans Dr. Ron Blum, chairman, president, and CEO and Bill Spies, COO. With over 30 years in eyecare as a practicing optometrist, Blum is an inventor and founder and president of various vision-related businesses. He was past founder, president, and CEO of Innotech, which was acquired by Johnson & Johnson. He was also general manager of advanced technology at J&J Spectacle Lens Group and led the team that invented Johnson & Johnson’s DEFINITY® progressive lens. Blum practiced optometry in Roanoke for approximately 20 years, is co- inventor of the electro-active lens technology platform, and is named in over 250 patents and patent applications. Spies is a past vice president of Essilor and directed sales and operations for one of the largest laboratory regions in the country with over 17 wholesale labs. He was past president of HOYA and is a former executive vice president and general manager of Seiko Optical Products for North and South America. In that role, he led Seiko’s pioneer launch of the high index category and the introduction of Seiko frames. In addition, Spies is a former manager of Corning Optical’s export business as well as its PhotoGray® and SunSensors® lens consumer advertising campaigns. He has worked in the optical industry for over 20 years. John Sailer is Senior Editor of First Vision Media Group. ---End Quote--- Now if we could find out what the cost of these new lenses are, the non-adapt presbyopes like myself could have something to shoot for. -=# Firewalker #=- --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ Check us out at the oft-updated http://www.glassyeyes.com!
