This sounds like the AR coating wasn't applied correctly.
I have a pair just like this, and it was the AR coating that was to
blame.
But, as you said, it made no difference as to the optical quality of
the lenses themselves, and the AR still does what it's supposed to do.

So, as the old saying goes, "a difference which makes no difference is
no difference". ;)
