Very interesting that Zenni's progressive lenses gives you a larger
reading zone width than LensCrappers. There isn't one pat answer for
how big the reading area should be, as it varies with lenses.
This problem of limited width for reading with progressives is
something that I've never gotten used to. With my first pair of
progressives I complained about the limited width of focus and was
told I was having problems adapting to progressive lenses. They
replaced the lenses with a wider corridor lens (I had to pay the
difference in upgrading to the more expensive lens) and it did help,
but alas, still have to move my head.
I was told that I would never be able to read an 8 1/2" wide page
without turning my head. I don't know the maximum width that can be
achieved. There are very wide corridor progressive lenses that cost a
bundle--Physio 360's for example--and are supposed to be state-of-the-
art for expanding the width of focusing.
I would go back to Lenscrafter's ASAP and complain. Find out what
brand/style of lens they sold you. They should have adjusted the
glasses to your face when you picked them up. They might try doing
that again but you'll probably not be satisfied. I'm sure they will
tell you that you need to adapt to progressives. (Four years later,
I'm still complaining about the problem with reading with
progressives.) Your next option would be to upgrade your progressives
to a wider corridor lens.
Finally, consider using basic reader glasses for extended reading
sessions. I'm a voracious reader, typically read two novels per week,
and I either forego glasses all together (hold the book more than a
foot away from my eyes) or wear readers. You might want to order
readers from Zenni as they are usually cheaper than drugstore readers
and will have astigmatism correction (if needed).
