Well, that depends on how much effort you are willing to put in :-) Vanilla sources would probably the easiest, since all you have to do is to apply the Glendix patches directly. With hardened sources, it is not so predictable; as you point out the versions are usually quite behind and the patch may conflict with other patches. I'd recommend basing off vanilla sources.
