If I can ask a more general question within the topic, I'd really be curious to hear what you folks in the field think about reporting on metereological events.
Often it seems to me as a reporter that newspapers draw a line between reporting on climate change papers and such (which many people see as theoretical) and reporting on storms and droughts and such (which of course are not at all theoretical). IMHO, newspapers have been incredibly loathe to even mention the possibility that climate change could be linked to what's happening now. But, encouragingly, that seems to be changing. Here are a couple of recent examples: A remarkably sharp, almost sarcastic report from Bill Blakemore of ABC News, linking global warming to the storms hitting D.C.: http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=2119971&page=1 And a reference in a recent LATimes report on fires in the Southwest, mentioning that some researchers link the drought there to climate change: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-wildfires25jun25,0,7586447.story?coll=la-home-headlines Personally, I prefer the LATimes approach, which offers a "crumb trail" to be followed up later in more depth if the fires continue to burn, which seems likely...as opposed to Blakemore's approach, which reads to me more like an editorial, and more likely to inflame opposition than pique readers curiousity.
