For Japan. More pertinently, the comparison with other technologies (as reported in the Japanese study) is: Solar Pv 53, Wind 29, Hydro 11. Tidal and wave generation are not mentioned. A few quick points after a skim read: It seems a bit pointless to me, comparing nuclear with coal and oil, as the basis of the discussion is an assumption that we need to move away from coal and oil? I think moving away from gas is taken, as the (currently) known global reserves are about 70 years, if I remember rightly. Therefore the comparisons need to be with the alternatives, including demand reduction - which isn't listed in the table. Also, I'll need to re-read the report but it doesn't say whether the respective costs of centralied as opposed to distributed generation (for example transport and construction of generation as opposed to construction and maintenance of distribution system). These may cause minimal differences. On costs of decommissioning, a nuclear power station are ~£3bn (http://www.ukaea.org.uk/news/2006/25_05_06.html). If just that money for the future planned power stations was put into demand reduction and renewable research now, would the returns be comparable? Finally, it needs to be remembered any solution needs to be globally applicable which means, potentially, nuclear power stations in every country. Which some people may or may not have an issue with. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Global Change ("globalchange") newsgroup.
