I have some interest in having a separate category for computer components, much like "devices" is used now, in GLPI.

I have been asked by the local university to suggest php programming projects for their upper level programming classes, and also for one MS student who needs a programming project, so GLPI is one thing they might be able to work on if the current programmers feel it has value.

My thought is this:

With the current computer inventory category you can list individual components, and that works just great for computers which are purchased as a complete, assembled unit. Those computers come with one warranty covering all the internal components. GLPI lets you enter the memory in name and size, general info about the DVD, etc, and that's all I need for these machines. Individual components are not purchased separately and I may not even know, or care about, the brand of the internal components.

However, I also build computers from individually purchased components, and these are purchased separately, warranted separately and priced separately, and I do need to enter financial information, brand, date of purchase, vendor, etc, for each item. And when I do purchase them they are not attached to a computer at all. I believe these need a separate category exactly like "devices" exists now. I also need to be able to attach individual components to computers, and to attach devices to devices, like speakers to monitors.

Currently when I purchase DVDs or memory or motherboards for computers, I list these as "devices", but to me there is something about these components that is different from speakers or UPSs or keyboards, which are also devices. A separate category, like "components1" (name not important) under "inventory" would be very helpful for me, and would include motherboards, memory, hard drive, DVD drives, video cards, etc.

I don't know the history of this, the previous feature mentioned below, but do the GLPI programmers or community feel this is a feature that needs to be added back in? Perhaps it was removed for reasons that aren't apparent to me? Is this work I should I should refer the university advisers to?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Greg

GLPI is a great project, my thanks to the developers.

I have some comments and questions, most apply to version 0.78.x that
I'm using, although we are getting ready to upgrade to the newest version.

Currently there seems to be no way to inventory things that (in English)
I would call components, like hard drives or DVD drives, independently
of a computer. For example, if I order five hard drives for stock, and
don't install them into a computer, there isn't a good way that I see to
put them into glpi as a "component", and assign them fielded data like
an inventory number and financial data. I could do this as a "device",
but that seems to me to mean something different. Is there something I
don't understand, or is there a better way?

Sorry but actually you can't manage components like other inventory item.

It's a previous feature.

Best-regards,
