You could look at s3fs to mount S3 as a local file system: http://code.google.com/p/s3fs/wiki/FuseOverAmazon
FYI, I am in the process of moving to GlusterFS because s3fs proved too fragile and slow for my needs. s3fs is not terrible, but be sure to try out all of your use cases before committing to it.
