Ok, I see the new favicon when I reload the page. The icon on my bookmarks
bar in Chrome however has not changed. Enabling the 'Unread messages icon'
Lab changes the icon back to the old style on the tab (along with number of
unread messages).
Perhaps enabling this and then dragging to one's bookmark bar will do the
trick.

In IE one can right-click the bookmark and change the icon from Properties.
In Chrome this is somewhat more complicated. Here's a
