Why do a search when one can just click the dropdown on the select box and
choose 'Unread'?

The question was not about selecting unread messages however. Each tab
shows the number of new messages since the last time that tab was viewed.
As soon as one views the tab, it briefly also shows the 'new' tag next to
those individual messages too.
