Only the one username exists (which is what was meant by ignoring case and
periods).  In fact, all e-mail servers ignore case.  While on some systems
the case might matter in a user-name; it never does in an e-mail address.

What you observed is likely the difference between how your friend logs
into gmail, and how their from address is configured (like on iPad mail it
would always capitalize the first letter).
